How to Read an IGI Certificate (So You Know Exactly What You're Buying)

When you buy a diamond, the certificate is the one document that tells you exactly what you're getting. At AuraLume, most of our pieces can ship with an IGI certificate on request — here's how to read one without a gemology degree.
The 4 Cs, in plain English
- Carat — the weight of the stone. Bigger isn't automatically better; cut and clarity matter just as much for how a stone actually looks.
- Color — graded from D (colorless) to Z (visible tint). For white diamonds, the closer to D, the rarer and more colorless.
- Clarity — how free the stone is from internal marks (inclusions) and surface marks (blemishes). "VVS" means very, very slightly included; "VS" is very slightly included.
- Cut — arguably the most important for sparkle. Cut grade measures how well the facets interact with light, not the shape (round, oval, etc.).
Why certification matters for lab-grown
Lab-grown and mined diamonds are identical on a chemical level. What differs is the origin story — and a certificate is your proof of what you actually bought. An IGI report confirms the stone was grown in a lab, lists its exact grades, and gives you a reference number you can verify. That traceability is part of why so many people choose lab-grown as a conscious, "clean-origin" option.
A quick checklist when you shop
- Match the certificate's report number to the stone you receive.
- Look at cut first, then color and clarity within your budget.
- Don't over-pay for a grade you can't see with the naked eye.
